Sleeve Gastrectomy in Dallas, Texas

Sleeve gastrectomy is a laparoscopic weight loss procedure offering slightly superior weight loss results to LAP-BAND surgery.

Originally used for extremely high BMI patients who were ineligible for other forms of weight loss surgery, the procedure is now available to lower BMI patients as a purely restrictive weight loss alternative to gastric banding and gastric bypass.

How Sleeve Gastrectomy Works

During the sleeve gastrectomy procedure, Dr. Felts creates a long narrow tube by dividing the stomach vertically with a line of sutures. This leaves approximately 15% of the stomach to act as a narrow pouch or tube while the remainder of the stomach is separated and removed.

The removed portion of stomach is responsible for secreting the hormone ghrelin which stimulates hunger. Because ghrelin secretion falls to near zero following the procedure, appetite and feelings of hunger reduce significantly.

Quantities of food that can be eaten are reduced substantially as the newly created stomach tube can only hold between 2 and 4 ounces. With this capacity of less than half a cup of food at a time, calorie intake decreases and weight loss occurs.

The stomach tube also slows emptying of the stomach because of the greater resistance to movement created by the walls of the narrow tube. Slower passage of food through the stomach means the patient feels full for a longer period of time.

Sleeve Gastrectomy Results

Sleeve Gastrectomy weigtht loss surgerySleeve gastrectomy patients normally experience weight loss at similar rates to LAP-BAND patients. Some studies suggest that the sleeve gastrectomy can achieve weight loss results similar to gastric bypass with between 60% and 80% loss of excess weight.

The stomach retains normal function because the valves that control filling and emptying are left intact. Once the stomach has recovered from the procedure, dietary restrictions for sleeve gastrectomy patients are fewer than with other weight loss surgeries.

Sleeve Gastrectomy and LAP-BAND Comparison

  • Both achieve weight loss by restricting the amount of food eaten
  • Neither requires rerouting of intestines such as with gastric bypass
  • The sleeve gastrectomy is not reversible whereas the LAP-BAND is
  • Periodic adjustments are not required for sleeve gastrectomy
  • Sleeve gastrectomy eliminates secretion of the hunger hormone ghrelin
  • Sleeve gastrectomy involves stapling and cutting whereas LAP-BAND does not
  • Sleeve gastrectomy has fewer dietary restrictions
  • Sleeve gastrectomy does not require insertion of a foreign object (gastric band and adjustment port)
