I had my surgery May 1, 2009; it changed my outlook on life and myself. The change is phenomenal. I was newly divorced and the mother of a rambunctious 5 year old. I had been lucky because at the time I was not on any medication for medical conditions. However, I knew that if I didn’t do something about my weight my luck would eventually run out. I wanted to be able to be active with my daughter and her not be held back because of my weight. I began working with my general practitioner, Dr. Christopher Lawrence, and the fantastic Dr. Felts. I was able to proceed with the Lap Band Procedure, and it has been life changing.
The Lap Band is not a cure or the “easy way”, but for me it is a life changing TOOL. It is a tool I use to limit the amount of food that I take in on a daily basis. The Lap Band also has changed the type of foods that I put in my body. I eat healthier, and therefore I am healthier. There are times when my choices still are not great. However, I have learned that instead of eating a whole bag of candy, I can eat one or two pieces, and I am done.
Before surgery I felt like I had a full life. Losing weight has shown me what I was missing, and I never even really realized what life could have been like for me. Even though I am only half way to my weight loss goal, I have lost enough weight that the benefits are fantastic! At surgery I was wearing a size 32. Now I am on my way out of wearing a size 24, on my way to a size 22, and in just 8 short months. To me this is fabulous! I hadn’t been to an amusement park since I was in high school but ventured to Six Flags this last November… twice! I was able to ride every ride comfortably, and I was able to have fun with my friends instead of always watching my friends have fun. I don’t worry about seating at a restaurant or movie theater, I don’t stand out like a sore thumb in photographs with other people, and I am looking forward to kayaking for the first time this summer with my friends. I feel like nothing is impossible or out of reach.
The surgery has made this weight loss possible, and I feel I am a better mother and teacher. I physically and mentally feel better about myself. Why am I successful? I am successful because I am now in the right mind set to change how and what I eat every day. I have the best support through my family, friends, and co-workers. I was mentally ready to make a change and tired of being tired. Dr. Felts tells me I’m the hero, but without him I wouldn’t have the tool I needed to make this change. Everyone at Dr. Felt’s office is encouraging and uplifting. For the first time EVER in my life I look forward to being weighed when going to the doctor’s office. It is the best decision I have ever made!
Way to go Erica! Amazed and proud of your accomplishments!
